Sol Kadhi is a drink from Goa and Konkan region of Maharashtra. It is made with kokum extract and coconut milk to which a little tempering is added. Sometimes it is also made plain without the addition of coconut milk.This is  usually taken after eating spicy food as it cools down the digestive system. Kokam is an excellent antidote for acidity problems. It can be had with plain rice as well.

Kokums ... 8-10
Coconut milk .. 200 ml. (I used ready tetra pack one)
Garlic paste ... 1/2 tsp
Green chilli paste .. 1/4 tsp (adjust to your liking)
Crushed cumin seeds .. 2 pinches or use whole
Curry leaves ... 2-3 (crushed with hand)
Coriander leaves .. for garnishing.
Salt ......... to taste
Oil .... 1 tsp


1. Soak the kokums in warm water for few hours.

2. Crush them with hand nicely.

3. Strain the water in a bowl and set aside discarding the kokums.

4. Take the garlic and chilli paste in a strainer and pour some liquid over it and press with the spoon to extract the flavours.

5. Stir in the coconut milk and little salt as needed. Be careful in adding the salt as the kokums are also usually salted

6. Crush the cumin seeds lightly or use whole if you like.

7. Heat a tsp of oil and add the whole or crushed cumin seeds and curry leaves. When they crackle stir them into the kadhi. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Idli burger, a mouth-watering delicacy which no one can resist. It is a fusion burger made from leftover idlis..It is a very simple and easy recipe to prepare and the kids will surely find this attractive. 

Idlis... 4
Potatoes... 2 or 3
Bread crumbs .. 2 tbsps
 Garam Masala powder... 1 tsp
Salt .... to taste
 Tomato ketchup.. .. as needed
Mayonnaise.... as needed
Onion slices
Tomato slices
Coriander leaves.. 1 tbsp
Cherry Tomatoes.. for garnishing
Sticks .. 2
Oil ... to fry


 Boil the potatoes and mash them.

 Add coriander leaves, salt, garam masala , bread crumbs and mix well.

 Make cutlets as big as idlis.

 Shallow fry them and set aside.

 Cut the onion and tomato into thin round slices.

 Take idlis and cut out the bulge from one side to get a flat surface.
 Fry them lightly to get a nice colour resembling a bun.

 Now to assemble the burgers spread a little ketchup and mayonnaise on the idlis and place the onion slice followed by the potato cutlet.Place the tomato slice and the second idli on top Put the cherry tomato in a stick and fix the idli burgers with them. Serve with French fries.

Chakli is one of the favorite tea time snack . Adding Palak purée gives it a lovely flavour and colour along with the nutrition.

 Spinach - 1 bunch
Mint leaves - 1/4 cup
Coriander leaves - 1/2 cup
 Green chillies - 3 - 4
 Maida - 1 cup
Rice flour - 1/2 cup
Besan - 1/2 cup
Sesame seeds - 1 tbsp
Oil or butter - 2 tbsps
Salt - To taste
Baking powder - 1 pinch
 Oil - to fry


 Wash the greens, cut them and boil adding little salt, pinch of baking powder to retain the green colour. Blend the purée and let it cool.

In a large platter take the three flours, sesame seeds, little salt and 2 tbsps oil. Mix them.

Knead this adding the purée little by little.

Make the dough and set it aside.

 Grease the chakli mould and put the dough into it.

Make chaklis and keep them on on a greased surface.

Heat the oil in a pan and fry them on medium and low flame turning the sides until crisp.

Remove them on an absorbent paper. Allow them to cool before putting them in an air tight container. Enjoy them with your tea.

Lauki (Bottle Gourd) is one such vegetable that is not liked by many people. My family also dislikes it. So I try to use it in a grated form and incorporate it in many dishes like theplas, koftas, cutlets, Bharta raita etc etc..
The bharta turned out so tasty that hubby dear said he would not mind eating lauki this way. I would recommend that you all give it a try once. It can be served with missi roti, makke ki roti, phulkas..

Lauki ... 2 cups grated
Onions .. 1
Green chillies .. 2
Tomato ........... 1
Tomato puree ... 2 tbsps
Garlic ............. 5-6 cloves (crushed)
Ginger ........... 1 tsp (grated)
Turmeric powder ... 1/4 tsp
Coriander powder .. 1 tsp
Cumin powder ....... 1 tsp
Red chilli powder .... 1/4 tsp or more if you like it spicy
Salt ...................... to taste
Coriander leaves ... handful
Oil .................... 4-5 tbsps


Peel and grate the lauki. Add a little salt to avoid discolouration and set aside.

In a pan heat the oil and add the ginger and garlic. Saute it.

Now add the finely chopped onion and stir fry until light brown.

Add the chopped tomato and green chillies.

Simmer until the tomato is soft.

Now squeeze out the water from the grated lauki and add it to the pan. Do not throw the water from the lauki. We can add it to the curry later or even use it to knead any dough with it.

Saute the lauki and onions until the water id dried up and you get a nice brown colour.

Add the spice powders and a little salt as the lauki is already salted.

Now add the tomato puree.

Add a little water drained from the grated lauki if needed and simmer until done.

 Finally add the coriander leaves.
