MEEN PUTTU

This is a Traditional South Indian fish recipe made with shark fish.Since that is not easily available you can use any fish preferably with a middle bone. Fish is first steamed or fried and then the bones are removed before the preparation which makes easier for the kids to relish it too.  This can be served as a side dish with dal and rice or with rotis.

Ingredients:
Fish ... 3-4 slices
Onion ... 1 cup (finely sliced)
Ginger .. 1 tsp
Garlic ... 1 tsp
Tamarind juice .. 1 tbsps (ad more if you like it tangier)
Turmeric powder .. 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder .. 1 tsp
Red chilli powder .. 1/4 tsp (or as per your taste)
Sambar powder ...... 1 tsp ( not in the recipe but I like to add this)
Garam masala ...... 1/2 tsp
Salt ...... to taste
Mustard seeds .. 1 tsp
Dry red chillies .. 1-2
Curry leaves ..... few
Asafoetida ... a pinch
Oil .... 3-4 tbsps
Coriander leaves .. handful

Method:
1. Clean the fish and marinate with salt.
2. Fry the fish or steam it. Remove the bones and crumble it into small pieces.
3.Heat oil in a pan and add the asafoetida, mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry red chillies.
4.When they crackle add the ginger garlic and onions. Saute for a minute.
5. Now add the fish, tamarind juice and the rest of the spice powders mentioned in the list.
6. Stir it and add the coriander leaves.
